His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce they have named their baby:

George Alexander Louis

Prince George's full title is:

His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge

A beautiful and fitting name for a future King, what do you think?

During the couple's brief chat with the press yesterday evening, BBC reporter Peter Hunt asked William if the baby's name was George, to which the proud father replied: "Wait and see. Wait and see."

When the Prince inherits the throne it is likely he will reign as King George VII unless Charles or William choose it as their name as Sovereign. William and Kate had to take tradition into account when choosing a name. It had to be suitable for a Prince and future King, and of course a name both parents felt happy with. The Queen's father was King George VI and grandfather George V was the founder of the House of Windsor. I expect the couple told Her Majesty when she met Prince George at Kensington Palace this morning, and no doubt she was immensely pleased.

More from royal commentator Victoria Arbiter.

The Telegraph shared this.

'Six Georges have worn the crown throughout history since the German-born George I, the first Hanoverian King of Great Britain ascended to the throne in 1714. The last was the Queen's father King George VI who died in 1952 whose first name was actually Albert and was known to his family as Bertie. He selected George, his fourth name, to use as Sovereign. The name George means farmer or earth worker. It was the 12th most popular name for boys in England and Wales in 2011. There has only been one other Prince of Cambridge he was also called George.'

From the Mail Online:

'Royal sources say the baby's names are not supposed to be symbolic but that the couple just like them.'Alexander is the male version of the Queen's middle name Alexandra.

Louis is one of Prince William's middle names.

There was some surprise Philip was not included as a fourth name, however Prince Philip's side of the family is very well represented. Others thought a Middleton family name should have been included but the general consensus thus far has been very positive regarding the name. Bookmakers said they are paying out "a six figure sum" to people who guessed the name of the third in line to the throne.William, Kate and George. I must say I like it!
